Some things to know when coming to Singapore

  1. Always bring napkins with you when you go out to eat unless you are dining in the finest restaurants.
  2. Always remember to turn on the water heater before you take a shower or bath (or do dishes). This switch is normally located near the light switch
  3. Don't assume the light switch will be where you expect it to be. Some times you will need to walk completely into the room to the opposite side to the light switch. Sometimes it is outside the room, sometimes it is inside. Do not assume that because it is in one spot in one room it will be in a similar spot in another room.
  4. You will need to learn the fine art of being pushy. If you are too polite you will be left standing at the bottom of the escalator or at the train station waiting for the next train.
  5. If you need anything, you will need to go to the mall
  6. Sunglasses are mainly fashion statements here rather than pratical items. I suppose since so much time is spent in the mall or underground that is why this is true.
  7. High class malls have nice bathrooms, lower class require you to pay 20 cents to use a hole in the ground
  8. English is the preferred language and there are public advertisements encouraging people to use good English
  9. Plan to eat and shop while you are here. It seems to be the main purpose of the island.
  10. There is a lot of construction going on so make sure you plan ahead where you are staying, so a jackhammer does not wake you up in the middle of the night (did I mention they work 24 hours?)
